DPOD’s development work and the Mini-programme

People with disabilities in developing countries count more than 600 million. In many developing countries, more than 10% of the population have a disability. According to the World Bank this group of people belongs to the most vulnerable, marginalised and extremely poor groups in the South.

These people are not a homogenous entity in terms of their influence, participation in society and income. Nevertheless, the majority is unemployed, ostracised and stigmatised. Many die at an early age. The quality of life for people with disabilities and their relatives is worsened by lack of education, jobs, income, support facilities, etc. Women with disabilities tend to be particularly weak and vulnerable.

The conceptual starting point for DPOD and the Mini-Programme is that people with disabilities are playing a special role in the local and global development. They need to be involved in development work related to the strengthening of civil society.

The Mini-programme

The Mini-programme defines the framework for the international development work of DPOD. It allows the member organisations of DPOD to apply for funding for development projects in 7 countries. The Mini-programme also builds up the necessary internal capacity in the member organisations of DPOD in the area of development work.
