Review of the gender
In order to gain knowledge for the gender strategy DPOD has gathered information on the actual situation for women with disability, the relationship between women with disability and men in everyday life, as well as the relationship between women and men with disabilities within disabled peoples' organizations. An external consultant from Uganda was employed to conduct the review.
The assignment ran from 12th of May 2008 and the deadline for submission of the final report to DPOD is no later than 29th of August 2008.
To evaluate and assess the gender sensitivity DPOD has selected 5 projects in Uganda and Ghana targeting women with disability and/or general projects targeting persons with disability.
Selected projects in Uganda:
- "Building Capacities and Sharing Information for Mutual Empowerment" 2004/06. A project partnership between Danish Women with Disabilities (KH) and the National Union of Women with Disabilities of Uganda (NUWODU) funded by PR.
- "District-based Disability Organisations - Phase I to III" 1996 to 2008. A project partnership between Disabled Peoples Organisations Denmark (DPOD) and National Union of Disabled People of Uganda (NUDIPU) funded by directly by Danida.
Selected projects in Ghana:
- "Organisational Development of Ghana Association of the Blind Women's Wing" 2007/08. A project partnership between Ghana Association of Blind (GAB) and the Danish Association of the Blind (DAB) funded via the DPOD Mini Programme.
- "Empowerment and capacity building of women with physical disabilities on the regional and district level in Ghana" 2002/05. A partnership between Ghana Society of the physically disabled Women's Wing (GSPD) and the Danish Association for the Disabled (DAD) funded via the DPOD Mini Programme.
- "Improved Livelihood and a Strong Voice in Advocacy" 2005/07. A partnership between Ghana Society of the physically disabled Women's Wing (GSPD) and the Danish Association for the Disabled (DAD) funded via the DPOD Mini Programme.
The outcome of the review is a brief report that will provide recommendations and/or guidelines for gender sensitive project design and implementation based on the study of 5 selected projects. The report will outline how to design specific women projects targeting women with disability at various settings and with various disabilities.
