HIV strategy
In the developing world persons with disabilities comprise some 10% of the total population and are often subjected to extreme social, political, financial and cultural marginalisation. This places people with disability at greater risk of contracting HIV. Despite this, people with disabilities are generally not recognised as a target group among policy makers and HIV/AIDS organisations.
DPOD will work to highlight the specific situation for people with disabilities and the challenges they face with regard to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Therefore DPOD is working on an HIV/AIDS strategy.
The purpose of the HIV/AIDS strategy is to assist both DPOD and DPOs in partner countries where HIV/AIDS is a central and important theme to focus on - and to strengthen the activities to approach inclusion of people with disabilities in the overall HIV/AIDS responses on a long term basis.
Goals and objectives
The goal of DPOD is to improve the rights and conditions of people with disabilities, achieving their equal access and full inclusion in society, while incorporating disability issues into the overall HIV/AIDS response.
The HIV/AIDS strategy outlines the general principles guiding DPOD’s response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic for PWD. The overall aim is universal access to reproductive health and equal access to HIV/AIDS information and services, which is in line with the UN Millennium Development Goal 6 on HIV/AIDS.
The objective of the strategy is “To ensure that HIV/AIDS policies and programmes focus on the special needs of people with disabilities”.
